What We Do
Our farm consists of about 440 acres situated along the West Emma Creek in southern McPherson County, KS, with an additional 160 acres of rolling pastureland in west Harvey County, KS. The land is in several parcels, some of it in continuous pasture since it was settled with other portions cultivated until 2015. None of the land has been cultivated since that time, and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides have been applied since 2016.
Currently we use all our land to feed our cattle, sheep, and goats — primarily through grazing of grasses and forbs and browsing of trees and shrubs. Animals are moved frequently to new paddocks using (mostly solar-powered) electric fencing. We are moving toward active management of wooded areas in accordance with principles of silvopasture. Diverse species of trees and shrubs are being planted to increase diversity beyond osage orange, elm, mulberry, etc.
